An Amazing Race Through Tokyo

An Australian company brought their entire team to Tokyo for a retreat.

They didn't want trust falls. They wanted something epic.

So we flew our crew to Japan and built them a two-part experience they're still talking about.

The Challenge

An Australian company was planning their annual retreat, but this time they wanted to go big. Really big. They chose Tokyo as the destination and needed an experience that would match the scale of the trip.

The brief was clear: no boring icebreakers, no awkward team-building exercises. They wanted something their people would genuinely love, something that would get them exploring the city, competing together, and creating real memories.

The catch? Everything had to be produced on-site in a country where neither the client nor our team were local. International logistics, language barriers, unfamiliar venues, all part of the puzzle.

The Big Idea

We flew our Social Scavenger team to Tokyo and designed a two-part experience. The first half featured epic on-site challenges at the retreat venue: high-energy, hands-on activities that got the competitive juices flowing.

Then we launched teams into a walkable neighbourhood of Tokyo for a full Amazing Race. Armed with their phones and a healthy dose of competitive spirit, teams raced through the streets completing challenges that blended local culture, problem-solving, and pure fun.

When everyone made it back, they were treated to a professionally edited video recap of the day's highlights and an award ceremony celebrating the top performers. It was the perfect capstone to an already incredible day.

Design Principles

International Production

Flying our team to Tokyo meant we could deliver the same quality experience anywhere in the world. We scouted locations, tested routes, and prepared every detail in advance.

City as Playground

Tokyo's walkable neighbourhoods are perfect for an Amazing Race format. We designed a route that balanced famous landmarks with hidden gems only locals know about.

Two-Act Structure

Starting with on-site challenges built team chemistry and energy before launching into the city. By the time the race began, teams were already locked in.

The Recap Moment

Ending with a video recap and awards turned the day into a story. Seeing themselves on screen created an emotional high that cemented the memories.

What We Learned

  • Can you really run an event in a country you're not based in?

Absolutely. The key is advance preparation. We flew in early, scouted every location, tested the entire race route, and built relationships with local vendors. By event day, it felt like home turf.

  • How do you handle the language barrier?

We designed challenges that worked across languages: visual puzzles, physical tasks, and universal experiences like food and photography. Where language was part of the challenge, we made it fun rather than frustrating.

  • What makes the video recap so powerful?

People don't just want to have a great time. They want proof they had a great time. A same-day video recap turns a one-day event into a lasting memory and a piece of culture they bring back to the office.

  • Is the Amazing Race format scalable to any city?

Yes, as long as the city has walkable areas with enough variety and density. Tokyo is exceptional for this, but we've adapted the format for cities around the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long does the Amazing Race portion last?

The race itself typically runs 2 to 3 hours, but we customize the length based on the group size and how much of the city you want to cover.

  • How many people can participate?

We've run Amazing Races for groups of 20 to 200+. The format scales beautifully. More teams just means more competition.

  • Do you handle all the international logistics?

We handle everything related to the event: venue coordination, route design, challenge setup, video production, and awards. You just get your team to the city and we take care of the rest.

  • Can challenges be customized for our company?

Every event is fully customized. We work with you to weave in company values, inside jokes, and team dynamics so it feels personal, not generic.
